I grew up less than 40 miles from the Broadway plantation owned by the Clinkscales family in Anderson County. My grandfather still owns a portion of this land. I have been in contact with an African American Clinkscales from this same area who told me her ancestor was a slave on this plantation who took the Clinkscales name. This was common practice, and as the family owned many slaves during the height of slavery this would help to explain the diverse backgrounds of the Clinkscales name. There is still a large population of Clinkscales in Anderson county, both caucasian and African American. This is the first time that I have heard of a Native American background for this family, but I am not surprised that there is one. I am happy to share any info that I have.
